Jeeze it ought to be a no-brainier. Just look at the merchant marine and the Navy in WWII. Navel personal were deployed on to merchant men. And they were armed.
Since this is a form of piracy, over international air-space,against enemy combatants who are not citizens, posse camantatus is not applycable. It is appropriate that military guards our airline travel. Atricle 2 Section 8 calls on the navy to protect our shores from piracy.
If pilots were USAF (and many are,,) carrying a side arm would be a no-brainier. The air Marshall roll can also be done by USAF personal. Wearing full dress blues and a side arm.
Less than lethal weaponry ought to be present also. Including the use of pork products.
